Volleyball cruises to sweep over Redlands in home opener

ORANGE, Calif. – In its first home match of the season, the Chapman University women's volleyball team cruised to a three-set win (25-18, 25-11, 25-15) over the University of Redlands on Tuesday night at the Hutton Sports Center.

After trailing 2-1 in the first game, Chapman (7-3) ran off four-straight points to take a 5-2 lead. The Panthers then extended their lead to as many as seven points on several occasion to get the 25-18 game one win.

The second set began similar to the first for Chapman as they fell behind 3-0, but then went on a run to gain the lead. Down 3-0, Chapman scored eight of the games next 10 points, highlighted by a pair of kills by junior MB Kate Ferrin to take an 8-5 lead. Redlands (0-7) came back to tie the game 10-10 after a Chapman service error. The Panthers then outscored the Bulldogs 15-1 over the remainder of the game.

For much of the deciding third set, the score remained close. Redlands held a brief lead at 10-8 after a kill by junior RS Alexa Herlosky. The Panthers then responded with nine-straight points to jump ahead for good at 17-10. Six of the Panthers nine points during the run were scored because either an attack or service error by the Bulldogs. Redlands committed 17 attack errors and seven service errors on the night. Herlosky had a team-high four kills for Redlands while sophomore L Brittney Overgaag led the team with 15 digs.

The Panthers were led by Ferrin's 12 kills. Senior L Alyssa Swatek led the team with 19 digs and added four service aces while sophomore S Corrine Ostrovsky had 24 assists. Sophomore S Jenny Gibson had a team-high five service aces which left her two short of the school single-game mark of seven which was last achieved in 2008 by Erin DeRycke
