San Marcos takes first-ever match against Chapman in four sets

ORANGE, Calif. – In its first-ever matchup against Cal State San Marcos, the Chapman University volleyball team lost the match in four sets (25-22, 27-29, 24-26, 19-25) on Wednesday night at the Hutton Center and are now 11-6 on the season.

Chapman (11-6) came back and won the first set 25-22 after trailing much of the way. San Marcos led 15-11 but Chapman rallied to tie the score at 16-16 after a kill by junior OH Ashleigh Gideon. Consecutive errors by San Marcos gave Chapman the lead which they would maintain the rest of the game. Gideon registered a double-double for the Panthers with 10 kills and 18 digs.

After trailing for the majority of the second set, Chapman took its first lead at 24-23 after an attack error by San Marcos (16-5) freshman MB Erin Talafus. The teams then traded the lead three times over the game's final nine points with San Marcos getting the win and evening the score at a game apiece.

In both the third and fourth sets, Chapman held a lead late and in each case, San Marcos was able to come from behind to win the games. Both freshman OH Taylor Degraaf and junior OF Lindsey Mitchell had double-doubles in kills and digs for the Cougars.

Junior MB/OH Kate Ferrin had a team-high 13 kills and five digs while sophomore S Corrine Ostrovsky had a team-high 33 assists and senior L Alyssa Swatek led the team with 28 digs. Sophomore OH Lena Buckendorf finished two kills short of a double-double with eight kills and 12 digs. Freshman S Morgan Slater added 17 digs.
