Volleyball takes down Oxy in three sets

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team ran its record to 3-1 at home this season with a three-set sweep (25-16, 25-23, 25-15) over Occidental College on Tuesday night at the Hutton Center. Chapman is now 2-1 this season against Occidental.

The deciding portion of the match came in the second set with Chapman (16-7) already holding a one game lead. The lead changed several times over the first portion of the second game and after a run by Occidental (13-6), it looked as if they were going to even the match at a game apiece. Down 22-17, Chapman rallied off five-consecutive points to tie the score at 22-22 with three of the points coming off of kills by sophomore OH Lena Buckendorf. The Panthers then capitalized on a pair of attack errors by Occidental to win the game.

In the third set, Chapman led from start to finish and registered a 25-15 win. An attack error by Occidental gave Chapman a 1-0 lead which is as close as the score would get. Freshman MB Val Geiger had a strong third set contributing all three of her kills on the night in the set.

Buckendorf fell two short of her career-high in kills with 12 on the night and also added nine digs while junior MB Kate Ferrin added 10. Senior L Alyssa Swatek led Chapman with 17 digs while junior OH Ashleigh Gideon added 10 and six kills. Sophomore S Corrine Ostrovsky had 30 assists.

The Tigers were led by sophomore OH Stephanie Gann who had 14 kills, freshman L Sita Wong's 15 digs and sophomore S Jessie Altman who had a game-high 37 assists.

Chapman has now registered 10 of its 16 wins on the season in three-set sweeps.
