Panthers put out Firestorm in three sets

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team led for all but three plays the entire match as they eased their way to a three-game sweep (25-15, 25-17, 25-13) over the Arizona Christian University Firestorm on Friday night at the Hutton Center. The Panthers, now 21-8 on the season, are just two wins shy of tying the school's single-season Division III wins mark of 23 which was accomplished in 1994 when the team finished 23-9.

The only time that Arizona Christian (12-13) led the entire match came in the second set after a service ace which gave them a brief 14-13 lead. Junior MB Kate Ferrin answered right back for Chapman with a kill that tied the score at 14-14 and started a 10-0 run for Chapman that pushed the team's lead to 23-13. During the run, Ferrin and junior OH Ashleigh Gideon both had three kills. The duo combined for 31 kills on the night with 14 and 17, respectively.

Gideon also added 16 digs for the Panthers and was one of five Panthers with 10 or more digs. Both Gideon and Ferrin had a double-double in kills and digs. Sophomore OH Lena Buckendorf just missed a double-double, finishing with nine kills and 13 digs.

Arizona Christian was led by the eight kills from junior RS Kylee Kammler and five kills and team-high 19 digs from junior OH Bethany Beckman.

Arizona Christian, formerly Southwestern College, changed their name last spring and with it changed its nickname from the Eagles to the Firestorm.
