Cahill gets 400th coaching victory in sweep of Caltech

ORANGE, Calif. – After sweating out two five-set victories against SCIAC rivals Claremont and Redlands last weekend, Chapman University volleyball coach Mary Cahill celebrated her 400th career head coaching victory with relative ease as the Panthers swept visiting Caltech 25-8, 25-13, 25-14 at the Hutton Sports Center on Friday night.

The milestone victory for Cahill puts her in rare air amongst the winningest coaches in NCAA Division III. Entering this season only 38 active coaches in Division III had accomplished 400 career victories. The five-year span between victories 300 and 400 was the fastest of her milestone wins thanks mainly to school-record 24 wins each of the past two seasons when she guided the Panthers to the second round of the NCAA regionals. She won her 300th during the 2008 season.

First-place Chapman (10-5 overall, 3-0 SCIAC) has won three in a row now – all at home – which is its longest win streak since beginning the season with four straight wins.

The Panthers were led by junior MB Kat Marusich and sophomore OH Katelyn Ashby who each recorded eight kills in the match. Senior S Corrine Ostrovsky also hit a milestone on Friday night with her 3,500th career assist. The team captain, who recently moved into second place on Chapman's all-time assists list, finished with 24 assists against Caltech and ranks No. 6 in Division III in assists per set.

For Caltech (0-8 overall, 0-6 SCIAC), Catherine Jamshidi led all players with 11 kills and added six digs and a block.

Chapman will travel to La Verne on Saturday to face the Leopards before returning home on Tuesday night to host Whittier College at 7:30 p.m.
