Top-seed Cal Lu bounces Panthers from volleyball tourney

ORANGE, Calif. – The top-seeded and No. 3-ranked Cal Lutheran University volleyball team was too much for visiting Chapman University, ousting the Panthers in straight sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-13) in the semifinals of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament at Gilbert Arena on Thursday night.

Chapman (17-12) will have to await the NCAA Division III championships announcements on Monday morning to find out if they will be awarded a Pool 'C' (at-large) berth into the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Cal Lutheran (29-1) won for the 23rd consecutive match and did so with a strong presence at the net, earning 12 team blocks to limit the Chapman offense to just a .011 hitting percentage and 19 kills.

The No. 4-seeded Panthers were led by sophomore OH Michele Hammer with six kills. Junior MB Val Geiger had four kills and a solo block. Senior S Corrine Ostrovsky led Chapman with 14 assists and 13 digs.

Cal Lu advances to face the No. 2 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the SCIAC Tournament final on Saturday. The Athenas were 3-1 winners over Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday in a match preceding Chapman-Cal Lu.
