No. 2 Claremont sweeps Chapman in home opener

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's volleyball team fell 26-24, 25-16, 25-16 to No. 2-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday night in the Panthers home opener at the Hutton Sports Center. Despite a strong showing from the Panthers against the Athenas in set one, Claremont edged Chapman in sets two and three to extend their eight-match winning streak to nine.

The Panthers and Athena's went toe-to-toe in the first set, earning 13 kills each with the lead changing five times in the first set. In the second and third set, Claremont claimed the early lead. The Panthers kept the fight alive with 6-2 runs in both sets.  

Claremont was led by senior Nicole Kerkhoff who recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Junior Mariah Rigg and sophomore Hannah Grobisen were forces at the net, four block assists each.

Junior Kylie Cooke led the Panthers with 11 kills and two block assists. Sophomore Kaitlyn Raymundo helped the passing game with 19 of the Panthers 25 assists.

Chapman will travel to Occidental Saturday, Sept. 17 for a 6 p.m. match before returning home to host University of La Verne on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Hutton Sports Center.
