Chapman earns first home sweep over Sagehens

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's volleyball team swept Pomona-Pitzer 25-22, 29-27, 25-14 on Saturday afternoon at the Hutton Sports Center. Three Panthers recorded double-digit kills in the match led by sophomore Courtney Justus who registered a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs.

The Panthers and Sagehens went point-for-point in the first set which encountered six lead changes. Tied 23-23, junior Kylie Cooke earned a kill to push the Panthers to 24-23. Chapman earned the set point off a perfect ace from freshman Eve Silverman to record the 25-22 win in set one.

Both teams were neck-in-neck in set two, with Chapman keeping the lead by just a couple points throughout the set. The Panthers and Sagehens exchanged points from 23 on. Silverman recorded a kill to give the Panthers a 28-27 lead. Silverman continued her offensive prowl, recording the final kill of the second set to propel the Panthers to a 29-27 win.

In set three, the Panthers ran away with the victory registering a 13-3 run. Justus dealt nine of the Panthers 13 points in the final set of the match.

Cooke led the Panthers with 12 kills and two block assists. Sophomore Kaitlyn Raymundo helped the passing game with 43 assists. Silverman also tallied 10 kills in the match.

Chapman will continue its five-game week at Riverside on Sunday. The Panthers will play UC Santa Cruz at 12:30 p.m. and La Sierra at 2:30 p.m. Chapman will return to SCIAC play on Tuesday, Sept 27 at 7 p.m. at Caltech.
