Women’s volleyball sweeps two matches on Senior Day

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Oberlin College and California Institute of Technology on Saturday at the Hutton Sports Center to send the Panthers' senior pair out with a pair of wins.

A hot start seized all the momentum and the Chapman University women's volleyball team didn't let up in a 25-12, 25-20, 25-17 victory over visiting Oberlin on Saturday. Sophomore Lauren Friend had another big match with 14 kills to help fuel the sweep.

Chapman scored 13 of the first 15 points in the match to quickly capture all the momentum it needed for the sweep. Friend had three kills during an eight-point run for the Panthers that grew the lead from 5-2 to 13-2.

After hitting .500 in the first set, the Panthers cooled off a bit but continued to keep Oberlin at arm's length. Sophomore Lindsey Johnson had 15 digs to go along with eight kills while sophomore Courtney Justus slammed down 10 kills in the sweep.

With three blocks and 56 digs in the sweep, Chapman limited Oberlin to just .086 hitting for the match. The Panthers hit .296 as a team.

Chapman started off strong against visiting Caltech in their second game of the day. The Panthers commanded the game, winning 25-8, 25-12, and 25-21. The Chapman side was led by senior Meghan Nelson, who had 10 kills in the final home game of her career. Senior Casey Brown and Friend had nine kills apiece as well.

Chapman had four service aces and hit over .500 to push past the Beavers and win the first set. The Panthers continued to out-hit the Beavers in the second set executing a .250 hitting percentage.

Caltech took an early 5-2 lead in the third set. Friend served six in a row to help the Panthers regain a lead of four points. A series of unforced errors on Chapman brought the Beavers within two points at the end of the set, but the Panthers pulled away to take the set 25-21.

Chapman will finish its season on the road, beginning with a SCIAC match at Whittier on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
