Women's volleyball falls in four to Pomona-Pitzer

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's volleyball team suffered a 26-24, 9-25, 25-15, 25-16 loss to visiting Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. The loss was the first for the Panthers (11-5, 5-2 SCIAC) at home this year.

Junior Lindsey Johnson had 11 kills and nine digs but the Panthers hit just .117 as a team. Pomona-Pitzer (6-12, 3-3 SCIAC) hit only .138 but held advantages in blocking and serving to key the win.

The Panthers nearly captured the first set with a 24-22 advantage but the Sagehens won the last four points to turn the deficit into an opening set win. The Panthers turned things around in the second set, hitting .370 on their way to a lopsided second set win. While the Panthers made just two attacking errors, the Sagehens had only six kills in the set and hit-.129.

In the third set, Pomona-Pitzer went on a long run to win another lopsided set and take a 2-1 advantage in the match. The fourth set was close early on with the Panthers leading 14-13. However, the Sagehens rattled off the next seven consecutive points to take a 20-13 advantage and cruise to the victory.

Sophie Janssen had five aces to lead the Sagehens, who had 10 service aces as a team, at the line. Junior Courtney Justus had nine kills with 12 digs and senior Abby Smith got her hands on four of the Panthers' five blocks. Pomona-Pitzer sent back 11 blocks in the match.

Chapman heads out to Occidental for a match on Tuesday but returns to Hutton Center on Oct. 6 to take on Vanguard.
