Volleyball suffers 3-1 loss to Cal Lutheran

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team fell in four sets to visiting Cal Lutheran on Friday. After going down 2-0 in the match, the Panthers (11-9, 5-5 SCIAC) fought back to win the third but ultimately fell 25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 25-15.

Junior Courtney Justus led the Panthers with 13 kills on .222 hitting while senior Kylie Cooke hit .296 with 12 kills. Junior Lauren Friend hit .438 with eight kills.

The Panther led for the majority of the first set, building a 20-14 lead before Cal Lutheran (9-10, 5-5 SCIAC) rattled off four consecutive points to make it 20-18. A Justus kill stopped the streak momentarily but back-to-back kills from Carly Rose brought the Regals within one. CLU continued on the run to take a 23-21 lead on back-to-back kills from Amy McKee. Cal Lutheran scored 11 of the last 13 points in the set to take the opening win.

The Regals kept all the momentum in the second set as both teams put together an efficient attack. The Regals hit .485 in the set while the Panthers hit .306. Justus slammed down five kills in the third set while two big blocks helped the Panthers hold Cal Lutheran to just .128 hitting in the third set to stave off the sweep.

However, the Regals stormed back out to an early lead in the fourth and grabbed the match-clinching win to split the season series.

McKee ended up with 12 kills from Cal Lutheran while Amanda Roberts hit .552 with a match-high 16 kills. The Regals hit .303 as a team.

Chapman fell for the fifth match in a row and dropped its fourth consecutive SCIAC match. The Panthers will look to end the skid tomorrow as they head to Redlands for a 2 p.m. match. They return home on Tuesday to take on Caltech at 7 p.m.
