Freshmen sweep SCIAC weekly honors

ORANGE, Calif. – Freshmen Sophie Srivastava and Jessi Lumsden swept the SCIAC volleyball Athlete of the Week awards after leading Chapman to a 3-0 week. Srivastava earned her second honor as the Specialist of the Week while Lumsden was honored as the Offensive Athlete of the Week.

Srivastava put up a triple-double in all three matches to take over the national lead in the stat category. She finished off her sixth triple-double of the season in the win over La Verne on Saturday to take the national lead in Division III. During her run of triple-doubles, the setter and right side hitter from Belmont, Calif. averaged 2.83 kills, 2.75 digs and 6.67 assists per set.

Lumsden continued to lead the Panthers on the attack. She hit .250 and averaged over four kills per set. The outside hitter from Carlsbad, Calif. posted a double-double in each match with double digit kills and double digit digs. She knocked down 18 kills on .424 hitting against Pomona-Pitzer to highlight the week and now ranks second in the SCIAC in kills per set as well as 10th in hitting percentage.

The Panthers earned a trio of crucial four-set victories last week, including an upset win over No. 21-ranked Cal Lutheran on the road. Chapman also defeated Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne at home to move alone into second place.

After a three-match week, the Panthers head to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Tuesday to take on the defending national champions at 7 p.m.
