Women’s volleyball earns homecoming sweep 

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University women's volleyball team swept the visiting Caltech Beavers 25-18, 25-19, 25-10 earlier this evening. The Panthers (16-4, 7-3 SCIAC) were led by freshman Sophie Srivastava on both sides of the ball. 

The rookie, who currently leads the nation in triple doubles, posted 16 assists, nine kills, seven digs and three blocks to help Chapman on offense and defense. She was joined by fellow freshman Jessi Lumsden, who also tallied nine kills along with three digs and two blocks. 

Chapman jumped to an early 5-1 lead in the first set after a couple of crucial blocks from Srivastava, junior Nayelli Munoz and senior Lauren Friend. The Beavers (3-16, 0-10 SCIAC) bounced back with a couple of points to cut the lead to two.  

The two sides went back-and-forth until the Panthers went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-12 lead. Caltech answered with five straight points of their own, but a couple of attack errors helped Chapman take the first set.  

The Panthers started the second set with a quick 5-0 lead on a couple of Caltech errors and kills from Munoz. The Beavers punched back, going on an 8-1 run to take a 9-7 lead over Chapman. Five kills from a combination of three different Panthers put them back up by five points. Lumsden stuffed freshman Alison Noyes on set point to give Chapman the 2-0 lead.  

The third set was all Panther action. Chapman took a dominant 12-3 lead. The Beavers battled back to score 10 points, but the Panthers ended the set on a 7-0 run with senior Sara Utsugi serving to end the match. 

Utsugi led the back line with 14 digs. Senior Jessica Blum tallied 11 assists while fellow senior Lindsey Johnson put up four kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Friend also put up big numbers, hitting .429 with seven kills and three blocks. 

The Panthers head to Occidental this weekdn but return home on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7pm to host Whittier College.
