Women’s volleyball takes CMS to five sets on senior day

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's volleyball team took No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to five sets earlier this evening. The Panthers (19-7, 10-6 SCIAC) dropped their final home match of the regular season 24-26, 17-25, 25-18, 25-16, 9-15 to the visiting Athenas (24-3, 15-1 SCIAC).

Chapman went into the opening set with a spark, scoring a quick six points with freshman Jessi Lumsden serving. The Panthers scored four of their first nine points on blocks from junior Nayelli Munoz, freshman Sophie Srivastava and seniors Lauren Friend and Courtney Justus.

After going up 10-2, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps went on a 7-2 run to cut their defecit to just three points. The Athenas pulled within one on a couple of attack errors, but kills from Lumsden and Srivastava put the Panthers up 15-12. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps inched back, but a couple kills from senior Linsdey Johnson gave Chapman a five point advantage.

The two sides traded points until an attack error put the Panthers up 23-18. With junior Sarah Tritschler serving, the Athenas went on an 8-1 run to finish out the set, taking it 26-24.

Chapman came out strong again in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps then went on a five-point streak to take the lead. Chapman regained the lead off a couple of Lumsden kills, but the Athenas tied it back up at 11. The Athenas then broke the set open, going on an 13-4 run to take the set.

The Panthers took a 5-2 lead at the beginning of the third off a kill from freshman Erika Wiles and a few Athenas errors. A couple of lead changes later, Chapman scored six straight to take a four-point lead. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps answered with three points of their own to cut the deficit to one point but couldn't regain the lead as the Panthers finished the set with five straight points.

The fourth set was all Panther action as they took a 17-4 lead with senior Kaitlyn Raymundo serving. The Athenas answered with six straight points, but a block from Munoz and Srivastava and a Friend kill sealed the fourth-set victory.

The fifth set saw four ties and four lead changes as both teams came out strong. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps then went on a 9-1 run to take a 13-5 lead. A couple of kills from Lumsden and Srivastave brought the Panthers back within five, but a service error on match point gave the Athenas their 14th SCIAC victory.

Lumsden led the Panthers with 13 kills, 16 digs and two block assists. Friend and Srivastava both tallied 11 kills, with Srivastava also earning an impressive eight assists, 10 digs and seven block assists. Friend notched one solo block as well as five block assists. Senior Sara Utsugi tallied 19 digs in the effort while also earning two assists.

The Panthers earned the No. 3 seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and will travel to No. 2 Cal Lutheran on Thursday, Nov. 1.
