Volleyball extends win streak to eight with sweep of Occidental

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team swept the visiting Occidental Tigers earlier this evening for its eighth consecutive win. Junior Mavis Lui helped lead the Panthers, recording nine kills with a team-high .538 hitting percentage on the night.

Lui also tallied one assist, four digs and a block assist in the effort. She was joined by sophomore Jessi Lumsden, who tallied 10 kills, 10 digs and a .391 hitting percentage.

Chapman jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first set off a couple of kills from Lui and sophomore Sophie Srivastava. A couple of consecutive service aces from the Tigers and eight back-and-forth points brought the score to 12-9 in favor of Chapman.

Occidental went on a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to one point, but the Panthers answered with seven consecutive points to take a 22-14 lead. The Tigers were able to get one more point on the board before Srivastava finished the set with a kill.

The Panthers jumped out to another 3-0 lead in the second set but were answered by back-to-back-to-back points from Occidental to tie the score. Chapman turned the tables and went on a seven-point streak to extend its lead.

Occidental senior Lauren Duffy and junior Madelene Sellergren responded with a couple of kills to bring the Tigers back within two points. The Panthers fired back, going on a 12-1 run to take the second set 25-12.

The third set was even until Chapman broke it open with a 10-1 scoring run to take a 22-11 lead. An attack error from the Panthers gave the ball back to Occidental, but junior Katharine Walker put down a big kill to bring the score to 23-12. The Tigers scored two more points from a Sellergren kill and a Chapman error, but Srivastava ended the match, giving the Panthers their seventh sweep of the season.

Srivastava ended the night with seven kills, 15 assists, 10 digs and five blocks. Senior Nayelli Munoz stuffed one down for a solo block and assisted three others for four total blocks. Freshman Cat Helgeson was all over the court, recording 18 digs and five assists in the victory.

The Panthers head to Redlands tomorrow but head back to Hutton Sports Center on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. for a showdown against No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
