Volleyball comes from behind to win 13th straight
ORANGE, Calif. – The come-from-behind kids did it again, this time defeating Cal Lutheran 19-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-11 to notch their 13th win in a row. The Panthers were led by sophomore Sophie Srivastava, who tallied her third consecutive triple-double and seventh of the season.
Srivastava tallied 11 kills, 24 assists and 17 digs on the way to victory. Fellow classmate Jessi Lumsden slammed down 17 kills while tallying 10 digs and two blocks. Sophomore Erika Wiles also hit in the double digits, tallying 12 kills and 10 digs.
Cal Lutheran jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set, but the Panthers answered with an 11-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. The Regals rallied back, scoring seven unanswered points for a 14-12 lead. The two sides traded points until Cal Lutheran ran away with it on a 7-1 run to end the first set.
The second set was tight, with no one team taking more than a three-point lead until the Regals scored four consecutive points to take a 17-11 lead. The Panthers fought back to get within two points, but sophomore Maci Haddad finished the second set with one of her 11 kills on the night.
The third set saw three lead changes before Chapman pulled out to a 19-15 lead. The Regals responded with four unanswered points to tie the set, but Lumsden and junior Mavis Lui helped the Panthers regain their four-point lead. A couple of kills from Wiles and senior Nayelli Munoz helped Chapman take the third set to stay in the match.
The fourth set was all Panther action as they went on a 10-1 run to jump out to a 14-6 lead. The Regals scored three consecutive points, but Chapman answered with three points of their own to push their lead to 17-9. A couple of kills from Lui and Lumsden and an attack error from Cal Lutheran tied the match up at 2-2 heading into the fifth and final set.
With the momentum swinging in Chapman's direction, the Panthers took a 9-4 lead in the fifth set. After trading a couple of points, Chapman held a hefty six-point advantage. The Regals did not go down without a fight, scoring four consecutive points to cut their deficit to just 12-10. Munoz and Wiles answered with a couple of big kills and the duo ended the match on a massive block to complete the come-from-behind victory for the Panthers.
Munoz tallied seven blocks on the night and Srivastava had five of her own. Freshman Cat Helgeson found herself all over the court, tallying 27 digs.
The Panthers head out on the road for their next two matches before returning home to Hutton Sports Center on Friday, Oct. 18 to host Redlands at 7 p.m.
