Volleyball sweeps Redlands, extends win streak to 15

ORANGE, Calif. – Sophomore Sophie Srivastava's Division III-leading eighth triple-double of the season led the Chapman University volleyball team to a 25-13, 25-20, 25-21 sweep of visiting Redlands. With the victory, the Panthers (17-2, 10-0 SCIAC) pushed their school record win streak to 15 consecutive matches.

Srivastava hit .364 with 12 kills, 13 assists and 13 digs to lead the Panthers in the sweep. Fellow sophomore Jessi Lumsden added in 10 kills and freshman Cat Helgeson put up 22 digs.

The Panthers opened the match with an 8-0 run to set the tone for the rest of the night. Chapman was never challenged after that as it cruised to a 25-13 win on the strength of a .400 hitting percentage in the opening set while holding Redlands to .108. Srivastava and sophomore Erika Wiles each contributed five kills in the dominant performance

The service game heavily favored the Panthers all night as the match unfolded. Chapman aced Redlands seven times with just one miss while the Bulldogs missed eight serves and had just three aces – all from Paige Davidson.

The Bulldogs kept it close in the second set, holding Chapman to a .200 hitting percentage. They took a 14-13 lead after a five-point run that ended with a block from Sydney Feenstra and Hannah Lanyon. A missed serve and another missed attack put Chapman back out in front immediately. A Srivastava kill followed with the Bulldogs being out of rotation on senior Eve Silverman's next serve for a 17-14 Chapman lead.

Redlands continued to put up a fight but could never erase the lead and Chapman scored five of the final six points to pull away late. The third set started in similar fashion to the first with Chapman building a 9-1 lead to start the set. The Panthers were cruising until match point at 24-15. The big lead helped Chapman withstand a five-point run from Redlands to keep the match going. The final attempt from Redlands sailed wide and clinched the match for Chapman.

Chapman faces its toughest road test of the year with a trip to No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tomorrow at 4 p.m. The Panthers return home for a non-conference Sunday matinee against UC Santa Cruz. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
