Volleyball cruises to Senior Day sweep

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team celebrated Senior Day with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-18 win over Pomona-Pitzer. The Panthers (22-4, 14-2 SCIAC) finished the regular season in second place – the highest finish in Chapman's short history in the SCIAC.

With the win, the Panthers now look to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and will host a semifinal match for the first time since joining the SCIAC in 2012. Chapman hosts Cal Lutheran or La Verne on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Panthers ran away with the first set when senior Eve Silverman was at the line for an eight-point Chapman run. Chapman turned a close 15-13 lead into a sizable 23-13 lead and closed out the set a few points later. Silverman landed back-to-back aces in the back corner of the court to spark the run.

Chapman hit .379 in the first set and held Pomona-Pitzer to .097 hitting in the set. The Panthers hit .311 in the sweep, led by a .667 clip from Mavis Lui. Lui had 10 kills in the match and sophomore Jessi Lumsden led the team with 11.

The Panthers kept rolling in the second set and built a big enough lead to withstand a late Sagehen rally. A six-point run in the third set opened up a 16-7 lead as Chapman cruised to the sweep.

Senior Nayelli Munoz had a block to go along with five kills on .333 hitting in the match. Sophomore Sophie Srivastava had nine kills to go along with her 25 assists and seven digs.

The Sagehens season came to a close but the Panthers will be the No. 2 see in next week's SCIAC Postseason Tournament. The semifinal will be played in the Hutton Center at 7 p.m.
