Volleyball falls in five in SCIAC title match

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team battled through five sets but fell to top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the SCIAC Tournament Championship match. The Panthers fell 25-16, 22-25, 19-25, 25-16, 15-6.

Senior Sophie Srivastava finished her historic career with her 32nd career triple-double, recording 13 kills, 26 assists and 16 digs. She also hit .406 in the match. Feloow senior Jessi Lumsden had 19 kills to go along with 13 digs. Sophomore Chanel Sud also had a double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs.

In a similar pattern to their last matchup with CMS, the Panthers won sets two and three to put the top-seeded team on the ropes. The Athenas fought back to capture the fourth set and pulled away quickly in the fifth.

After dropping the first set, Chapman sprinted out to a 6-0 lead in the second and never let CMS back in. The Athenas never came closer than a three-point margin until a late run cut a 24-19 lead into a 24-22 lead, but Lumsden ended the set with a clinching kill to knot the match at one set apiece.

Chapman hit .387 in the third set to key the set win. The teams went back and fourth early on but the Panthers went on a five-point run to turn a 16-15 deficit into a 20-16 lead. The Panthers rode the momentum to the win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.

CMS quickly turned the tables in the fourth set, holding the Panthers to .026 hitting, to force a fifth and deciding set. CMS jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the fifth and then traded points for a 15-6 win to claim the SCIAC Tournament title.

The Panthers season comes to an end with a 13-13 overall record and its second consecutive championship match appearance.
