Women's volleyball falls in four to Colorado College

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's volleyball team fell in four sets to visiting Colorado College in the final tuneup before the start of SCIAC play. The Panthers avoided the sweep with a third set win before Colorado College sealed its 25-21, 25-12, 27-29, 25-21 win.

Julin Kenison was the only Panther to reach double digit kills but recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. Angela Atis came off the bench in the second set and ended the match with 15 assists and 10 digs.

The Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the match but saw the Tigers storm right back and tie the set at 8-8. Chapman went on to hit .000 in the first set and ended the second set with a negative hitting percentage to fall in the 0-2 hole.

Chapman seemed to find more of a groove in the third, hitting .172 while holding Colorado College to a .113 to take the third set. The set needed extra points as the teams went back and forth late and neither led by more than three throughout the set.

Chapman had the first set point at 24-23. A long rally ensued as both teams refused to let the ball go down, but the final attack from Chapman missed the back line to even the set at 24-24. The Panthers and Tigers went back and forth over the next few points as the Tigers avoided another set point and then set themselves up with match point at 26-25. Atis drew the Panthers even with a dump over the net for a kill. Chanel Sud followed with an ace but Colorado College responded again.

Kills from Leighton Gagnon and Annika Ruud clinched the set for Chapman and avoided the sweep. However, Colorado College built an early lead in the fourth and never let the Panthers back in to clinch the match.

Keely Kandziora led the Tigers with 16 kills. As a team, the Tigers put up 12 blocks to turn back the Chapman attack.

Chapman opens up its SCIAC schedule on Tuesday at home with a 7 p.m. match against Pomona-Pitzer.
