The Chapman University women’s water polo team has claimed top-rank among all NCAA Divisions I, II, III and NAIA with a 3.42 team grade-point average for the 2008-09 academic year. The rankings, released by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC), have the Panthers No. 1 in the nation ahead of Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.) with 3.36, Brown University (R.I.) with 3.35 and, locally, the University of Redlands with 3.21.

They helped to re-write the record books this spring, now two Chapman University women’s water polo players have earned All-America honors. Senior 2-meter Sabrina Cook and sophomore goalie Celia Huling have been named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division III All-America team for 2009.

Two Panthers named to ESPN Academic All-District team

A pair of Chapman University seniors was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VIII at-large team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) last week. Women’s water polo player Daniella Beintema and All-America men’s tennis player Clifford Yook were each named to the at-large team for their athletic and academic achievements.

Chapman University women’s water polo player Sabrina Cook has been named to the All-Western Water Polo Association team for her school record-breaking performance in 2009. The senior 2-meter earned honorable mention after scoring 129 goals this season and averaging over 4.6 goals per game.

Season comes to an end with 11th place finish at WWPAs

Losses to Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday brought the Chapman University women’s water polo season to a close at the Western Water Polo Association championships in Santa Clara. The Panthers entered the conference playoffs seeded No. 11 and ended up placing 11th at the event. They finish with a 9-22 record overall.

The Colorado State women’s water polo team scored three goals in the final 1:39 of the third quarter to pull away from Chapman University and spoil any thoughts of a Panther upset in the opening game of the Western Water Polo Association championships at Santa Clara University on Friday morning.

The Chapman University women’s water polo team will open up postseason play on Friday when it faces Colorado State in the first game of the Western Water Polo Association championship tournament. The No. 11-seeded Panthers and No. 6-seeded Rams will square off at 8 a.m. at the Sullivan Aquatics Center on the campus of Santa Clara University.

The Chapman University women’s water polo team couldn’t recover from a big first half deficit and dropped its final home game of the season 17-10 to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in a battle of two of Division III’s top-10 teams. The Sagehens entered the game ranked No. 2 in the division while the Panthers are ranked No. 8.

The Chapman University women’s water polo team outscored the opposition 4-1 to start the second half of play and went on to defeat visiting Azusa Pacific University 13-8 at the Allred Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon. It was the Panthers second straight win.

This one was over before it had even begun. Freshman 2-meter Arielle Worthington scored the Panthers’ first two goals within a minute and a half of the opening whistle and the Chapman University women’s water polo team cruised to a 24-1 victory over visiting Caltech at the Allred Aquatics Center on Sunday morning.

The Chapman University women’s water polo team will begin the 2009 season playing host to the annual Chapman Tournament which debuts at the new Zee Allred Aquatics Center next weekend. The Panthers enter the season up one position from last year at No. 8 in a preseason poll conducted by the Collegiate Water Polo Association.
