Offense comes to life in 18-11 win over UC Irvine club team

ORANGE, Calif. – For the first half, the game stayed close, but in the second half the Chapman University women's water polo team pulled away for an 18-11 win over the UC Irvine club team on Sunday afternoon at the Allred Aquatics Center, ending a six game losing streak.

Chapman (3-10) took a 3-0 lead at the two minute of the first quarter on a goal by sophomore utility Mandy Sheehan only to see the lead nearly disappear a few minutes later. Tam Nguyen put UCI on the board with 1:03 remaining in the first quarter which narrowed Chapman's lead to 3-1. Just 30 seconds into the second quarter UCI struck again as Sharon Dyer pulled her team to within one score at 3-2.

Back-to-back goals by freshmen Juliana Botting and Julie Case opened Chapman's lead back up to three scores at 5-2. Junior 2M Stephanie Roy put the Panthers up 6-2 with a goal from the left wing at 4:09 in the second quarter as she floated the ball over the outstretched hands of UCI goalie Karmen Wong. The teams combined to score five goals over the final four minutes of the quarter, trading goals. A score by Jennifer Wen just before halftime brought Irvine back within three scores at 8-5, which was the score at halftime. Wen had two goals for UCI while Nguyen and Dyer each had a team-high three scores.

The Panthers maintained a four goal or five goal lead for the majority of the third and fourth quarter. It was not until the last four minutes of the fourth quarter that Chapman really broke the game open. With a 14-10 lead, Chapman scored four goals in the last few minutes of the game as four different players scored during the stretch. A total of 11 Chapman players scored in the game led by three scores from Case. Sophomore utility Sam Martin, junior 2M Arielle Worthington, freshman utility Hilary Campbell, junior driver Briana O'Keefe along with Roy each  had two goals for the Panthers.
