Panthers score season-high 20 in another home win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University water polo team scored a season-high 20 goals and defeated visiting Caltech 20-5 at the Allred Olympic Pool on Wednesday evening. The Panthers improved to 6-3 at home this season and have won six of their past eight matches overall.

Led by junior 2-meter Arielle Worthington's four goals, Chapman (9-12) built a 15-0 lead and carried the shutout deep into the third quarter before Caltech (1-7) got on the board. The 2010 All-American scored three of the Panthers' eight second quarter goals helping Chapman to a 13-0 halftime lead. Sophomore driver Kellie Stump also scored a pair of goals in the period and finished with three in the game.

Freshman utility Juliana Botting gave Chapman a jump start offensively, scoring two of her three goals in the first quarter. The rookie added a pair of assists and two steals as the Panthers led 5-0 after the first. Sophomores Mandy Sheehan and Sami McLaughlin combined for nine assists, as well.

In goal, sophomore Allison Smith got the start and made three saves in two and a half quarters of play.

Caltech scored its first goal of the game with 3:06 left in the third quarter and out-scored the Panthers 4-3 in the final quarter.
