Lancers pull away to beat Chapman 17-11

ORANGE, Calif. – A strong finish by the visiting Cal Baptist University women's water polo team broke open an otherwise close game with host Chapman University and the Lancers held on for a 17-11 victory at the Allred Pool on Friday evening. The loss snapped Chapman's three-match home winning streak and dropped the Panthers to 7-4 at the Allred Pool.

Cal Baptist (23-11) won for the sixth time in its past seven matches. The Lancers jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Chapman (10-14) and the Panthers were forced to play catch up the rest of the game. Chapman pulled within one goal on three separate occasions, including a goal by sophomore utility Sam Martin with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter to cut Cal Baptist's lead to 8-7.

From there the Lancers netted four consecutive goals and outscored Chapman 9-3 over the final 10-plus minutes of the game to win going away. Junior driver Petra Kovacs led all players with five goals in the game for Cal Baptist.

Martin finished with a team-high four goals for Chapman – her seventh consecutive game with at least one goal. Freshman utility Juliana Botting and junior 2-meter Stephanie Roy each added three goals and sophomore utility Ani Marganian pitched in another seven assists for the Panthers.

Chapman will travel to Redlands on Saturday  and Caltech next Friday before wrapping up the regular season at home against Whittier College on April 16 at 5 p.m.
