Martin scores game-winner as Chapman earns another split

ORANGE, Calif. – For the second-consecutive day, the Chapman University women's water polo team split a pair of games at the Chapman Tournament. On Sunday at the Allred Aquatics Center, Chapman defeated Gannon University 12-11 and then lost afternoon game 11-8 to La Verne.

Game 1: Chapman 12, Gannon 11
With one second remaining, junior utility Sam Martin scored the game-winner from the left wing to give Chapman a 12-11 win over Gannon. Just six seconds before Martin's goal, Gannon senior Molly Andrews tied the score at 11-11 which was the game's 8th tie to go along with four lead changes.

Gannon took a 2-0 lead at the 3:30 mark of the first half on a score by Colleen Harriger. With under two minutes remaining in the quarter, sophomore utility Juliana Botting and junior utility Ani Marganian scored less than a minute apart to even the score at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.

Chapman trailed 5-3 in the second quarter but went on a 5-1 run over the next eight minutes of play. Back-to-back goals by freshman utility Riley Ford assisted by sophomore driver Julie Case gave Chapman an 8-6 lead with 4:53 remaining in the third quarter Gannon came back and tied the score at 8-8 with 2:29 remaining in the third on a score by freshman Mara Parker. The teams then traded scores for the rest of the game.

Game 2: La Verne 11, Chapman 8
Chapman (3-2) led by as many as three scores in the second quarter at 6-3 after Ford scored with 51 seconds remaining in the half. La Verne got a score with five seconds before the half by Kelsey Broyles and then two-consecutive goals by Ashley Forsberg in the first two minutes of the second half to even the score at 6-6. La Verne then outscored Chapman 6-2 over the final two quarters to get the win.

With one assist in the game, Marganian became Chapman's career-assists leader, now with 132. Martin had a team-high three goals in the game.
