Last-minute goal by Martin gives Chapman 7-6 win over APU

ORANGE, Calif. – Down by five scores in the first quarter, the Chapman University women's water polo team came all the way back and defeated Azusa Pacific University 7-6 on Friday afternoon at the Allred Aquatics Center. With 1:05 remaining in the fourth quarter, junior utility Sam Martin scored the game-winner to give Chapman its first win over APU since 2009, after losing five-straight in the series.

With 30 seconds remaining and Azusa Pacific (7-18) with possession, junior utility Ani Marganian sealed the win for Chapman (11-7) with a steal in front of the net. Marganian had three steals and an assist in the game.

The first quarter was all Azusa Pacific as it took a 5-0 lead. Sophomore 2M Megan Minekime and freshman utility Courtney Folsom scored four of the team's first five goals to push the lead to 5-0 with 46 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Martin got Chapman on the board 10 seconds later to narrow the score to 5-1.

Down 5-3, Chapman gave up its final score of the game 20 seconds into the third quarter to freshman driver Lora Donaldson. Chapman scored the final four goals to pull out the win as Chapman's defense forced APU into 12 turnovers.

Martin and freshman utility Riley Ford each had three goals for Chapman while sophomore driver Julie Case scored the other goal. Freshman goalie Kirsten Spicer came in the game in the second quarter and had 12 blocks while allowing just one goal.
