Claremont controls throughout, tops Chapman 10-5

ORANGE, Calif. – Other than the score being tied 1-1 briefly in the first quarter, the Chapman University women's water polo team trailed throughout, losing 10-5 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday afternoon at the Allred Aquatics Center. The Panthers now need two wins in their last five games to secure their first winning season since 2004 when the team went 17-13 in Coach Ploessel's first season.

With the game all even at 1-1 in the first quarter, Claremont (9-10) rattled off three-consecutive goals in the last three minutes of the quarter to extend its lead to 4-1. Sophomore Candace Filippelli had three of the Athenas' first four goals and had a game-high five on the afternoon.

Chapman (12-9) began the second quarter with a goal by freshman utility Riley Ford at the 6:51 mark which brought Chapman within two scores at 4-2. The teams then traded scores with CMS leading 5-3 after a goal by sophomore driver Julie Case which is as close as Chapman could get. Both Case and Ford had a team-high two goals in the game to go along with four steals each.

Over the remainder of the first half and into the third quarter, Claremont went on a 4-0 to take a 9-3 lead as Filippelli added two more goals to put the game out of reach.  Claremont's defense forced Chapman into 14 turnovers while freshman GK Allison Hu had eight blocks for the Athenas.
