Women's water polo nearly comes back in narrow loss to GWU

ORANGE, Calif. – A final attempt to tie the match was knocked away as the Chapman University women's water polo team fell 9-8 to visiting George Washington on Wednesday. Freshman Grace Schade scored three goals to lead the Panthers offensively.

After the Colonials jumped out to a 1-0 lead, back-to-back goals from Shade and Emily Fong made it 2-1 in favor of the Panthers. George Washington tied the match at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter and continued on a 4-0 run to go up 6-2. Junior Lindsey Campbell broke the Colonials' streak with a goal toward the end of the second quarter to make it 6-3 at halftime.

Shade struck twice in the third quarter and senior Kate Staskus found the back of the net while the Panthers limited the visitors to just one goal to make it 7-6. However, GWU scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to go back up three goals.

Senior Alison Quincy converted a 5-meter opportunity to close the gap in the fourth and Campbell struck again to bring the Panthers back with one. After the two teams traded possessions, the Panthers called timeout with just a few ticks of the clock left. A lob toward the net was tipped toward the goal above the crowd but Katherine Moeller was perfectly positioned for the Colonials to block away the last effort.

Goodspeed made five saves in goal for the Panthers as her team outscored Division I George Washington 5-3 in the second half.

The Panthers host Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 11 a.m. in their SCIAC opener.
