Chapman dominates Oxy, falls to Brown in doubleheader

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team split a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Occidental College 13-8 and falling 10-9 to Brown University at Allred Pool. Junior Alison Quincy led the Panthers with six goals, while freshman Grace Schade tallied eight assists on the day.

Game 1: Chapman 13, Occidental 8

Quincy scored five goals to fuel the Panthers to the 13-8 win over Occidental. She moved up to fourth all-time on the Panthers scoring list with 179 career goals, passing Sam Martin.

It didn't take long for Quincy to score the three goals she needed to leapfrog Martin. She scored Chapman's first three goals in the first three and a half minutes of the match to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Mary Welton extended the lead to 4-0 and the Panthers had a commanding 6-1 lead after the first quarter.

Occidental fought its way back into the game in the second and trailed by only three at halftime. Lizzy Kossin brought the Tigers back with a hat trick in the second quarter. She scored all three goals consecutively in less than three minutes to turn a daunting 7-1 deficit into a 7-4 deficit at the half.

Chapman found the gas pedal again in the third, outscoring the Tigers 6-2 in the period to put the game away. In the first two minutes, Quincy scored twice and Emily Fong scored once to make it 10-6 Chapman. Schade added back-to-back goals as the Panthers extended the lead to 13-6 going into the fourth quarter.

Again, Occidental was able to outscore Chapman in an even period but it wasn't enough to overcome the Panthers' large lead. Kossin scored again for her fourth goal of the match and the Tigers held the Panthers scoreless for the 13-8 final.

Sophomore Kerry Goodspeed made seven blocks in goal to go along with a pair of steals. Schade distributed three assists in addition to her two goals.

Game 2: Brown 10, Chapman 9

In game two, both teams struggled to find the back of the net in the first quarter not scoring until six minutes into the contest. Senior Kate Avery and Fong were first on the board for the Panthers to give Chapman the 2-1 lead in the first.

Brown tied the game up 2-2 in the second, but Fong netted back-to-back goals over a three-minute span to push Chapman to a 4-2 lead. Senior Olivia Santiago scored with just 20 seconds left to move the score to 4-3 at the end of the first half.

The Bears rallied from their 4-3 deficit in the third quarter to tie the match up 7-7 and then run away with the win. Brown took its first lead of the game a minute into the fourth quarter, sparking a 3-0 run to take the lead 10-7 with four minutes left. Quincy and senior Kate Staskus scored a pair of goals with less than minute left in the match to tighten the score 10-9 but the late run fell short for the Panthers.

Chapman will play its next match on the road at La Verne before returning home to host Claremont-M-S on Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m.
