Schade scores hat trick in loss to CMS

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team suffered a tough 10-8 loss to visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday in Allred Pool. Freshman Grace Schade scored a  hat trick to lead the Panthers in the loss.

It was the third loss in a row for the Panthers, who fell to 8-17 overall and 3-3 in the SCIAC. The SCIAC's leading scorer senior Alison Quincy scored a goal while junior Emily Fong found the net twice.

Sophomore Allison Galuszka made her debut in goal for Chapman. She made five blocks and came away with a steal in the narrow loss.

In a close game throughout, Chapman took the early 2-0 lead and held a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. CMS proved to be stingy in the second, not allowing a Chapman goal while tying the score at 4-4 at halftime. CMS overtook the lead early in the third and built an 8-6 advantage. However, Chapman closed the gap and knotted the match at 8-8 heading into the fourth quarter.

CMS' stingy defense came up again in the fourth as it held the Panthers scoreless. On the other end of the pool, the Athenas added a pair of goals to secure the win and leap Chapman for fourth place in the SCIAC standings.

Chapman plays its final home game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Panthers host first-place Whittier.
