Chapman falls to Whittier in SCIAC Semifinals

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team fell to undefeated Whittier College 17-9 in the SCIAC Tournament Semifinals at Redlands on Saturday afternoon.

The Poets jumped out with an early 6-2 lead in the first quarter. Senior Kate Avery scored both Panthers goals in the first quarter with back-to-back shots less than a minute a part.

In the second, quarter, Chapman and Whittier went goal for goal scoring four goals each to move the score to 10-6. Junior Emily Fong scored the Panthers first goal of the quarter two minutes in, followed by a goal from sophomore Katie Dalgamouni. The final pair of goals for the Panthers came from junior Grace Schade and senior Alison Quincy.

Leading 10-6 in the third quarter, the Poets pulled away with a 3-1 run. Fong scored the Panthers only goal of the third period to keep the Panthers in the game 13-7 at the 5:24 minute mark.

Whittier secured its win in the fourth quarter, finding the back of the net four times to earn the 17-9 win. Chapman was held to just two goals in the final quarter of the match with goals coming from sophomore Julia Furtado and senior Deanna Farley.

Chapman will take on the No. 2-seeded Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in a match for third place.
