Comeback effort falls just short against GWU

ORANGE, Calif. –  A late comeback effort fell just short as the Chapman University women's water polo team fell 8-7 to George Washington. The Panthers were playing their six match in the last four days.

Chapman went up early3-1 at the end of the first quarter and 5-3 at halftime. Senior Lindsey Campbell scored both of her goals in the first seven minutes and senior Emiko Mizusawa added one with 17 seconds left in the opening quarter for the initial lead.

As GWU pulled within one, Mizusawa converted a 5-meter opportunity and senior Emily Fong scored just 33 seconds later to make it 5-2.

With two minutes remaining in the first half, the head coach for George Washington was shown a red card and ejected from the match. With the head coach gone, Chapman alumnus David Carson '12 was left to coach against his former college coach in Chapman's head coach Eric Ploessel.

The Colonials responded with a big 5-0 run that last well into the fourth quarter. The Colonials kept Chapman off the board in the third but had four different players score a goal to claim a 7-5 lead. Senior Grace Schade ended the Panthers' scoring drought but GWU immediately responded to make it 8-6.

Junior Andi Sandoval scored with just over two minutes left to make it a one-goal game again. Chapman was able to get the stops it needed defensively but couldn't find the game-tying goal in its final two possessions.

Sophomore Alyssa Welfringer made 11 saves in goal and had three steals.

The Panthers remain home to take on Macalester on Friday at 5 p.m.
