Women's water polo falls in SCIAC Tournament opener

LA VERNE, Calif. – Senior Grace Schade scored four goals but the sixth-seeded Chapman University women's water polo team fell 14-11 to third-seed La Verne in the opening round of the SCIAC Tournament. Chapman will play the last match of the day tomorrow.

Chapman fell in an early 4-2 hole to La Verne after the first quarter. Junior Andi Sandoval put the Panthers on the board with a 6-on-5 goal to make it 2-1 La Verne. The Leopards stayed on the attack in the second and increased their lead to 8-4 at halftime.

Chapman tightened up defensively in the third, allowing only two goals. Schade scored twice in the quarter and senior Emiko Mizusawa scored late to make it 10-7. Mizusawa and senior Lindsey Campbell each scored twice.The Leopards and Panther matched each other with four goals each in the fourth. Stephanie Rosero led the Leopards with five goals.

Chapman will play the winner of the Redlands-Caltech match tomorrow at 4 p.m. to determine which team moves on to the fifth place match. Redlands and Caltech meet at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
