Women's water polo finishes sixth in SCIAC Tournament

LA VERNE, Calif. – Seniors Emily Fong and Grace Schade combined for seven goals but the Chapman University women's water polo team fell 13-11 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the fifth place match of the SCIAC Tournament. The Panthers season comes to an end with a 7-22 record overall and a 4-7 record in SCIAC matches.

The back-and-forth, high-scoring affair started with both teams lighting up the scoreboard in the first half. After CMS scored the opening goal of the match, Chapman went on a 5-2 run to take a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Schade scored two goals in the quarter with fellow senior Lindsey Campbell fired in one goal as did junior Elaine Peterson. Senior Emily Fong scored her first as time wound down in the first quarter to make it a two-goal lead.

The scores reversed in the second as CMS took the 5-3 advantage to tie the match at 8-8 at halftime. Neither team bent in the third as they matched each other with two goals each. Junior Julia Furtado gave the Panthers a 9-8 lead but CMS bounced back with two goals. Schade scored her final goal in the last minute of the quarter to make it 10-10 heading into the final eight minutes.

CMS seized control in the final quarter, scoring its first goal on its first possession to take the lead and adding two insurance goals. Fong scored her fourth goal of the match in the final 10 seconds to close out her career.

Chapman took sixth place in the tournament after tying for fifth to end the SCIAC regular season.
