Hattori nets five goals to key SCIAC-opening win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo defeated the University of La Verne 13-10 Wednesday night at home in the Panthers' SCIAC opener. This big win was backed behind four fourth quarter goals by freshman Audrey Hattori.

The Leopards (0-1, 0-1 SCIAC) scored first off a goal from freshman Jassmine Kezman. Hattori then scored her first goal and sparked a 3-0 run to end the first quarter, giving Chapman a 3-1 lead. The Panthers (1-4, 1-0 SCIAC) outscored the Leopards 4-2 in the second quarter behind two goals from freshman Kylie Beloian to give them a 7-3 lead at the half.

After a solid offensive third quarter from La Verne, the Leopards narrowed the gap but Chapman held on to a 9-8 lead entering the final quarter of play. The Panthers then went on to outscore the Leopards 4-1 in the fourth quarter due to Hattori's four goals to give Chapman the 13-10 victory over La Verne.

In her first collegiate conference game the rookie, Hattori scored a game-high five goals, four of which came in the last seven minutes of play. She also tallied an assist and a steal. Sophomore defender Argelia Diaz and Beloian each scored 2 goals to help the Panthers' strong offensive outing.

La Verne's senior Jasmine Bustamante and Kezman each managed three goals to lead the Leopards.

The Panthers will be right back in the pool tomorrow against Mckendree University (4-8) at the Allred Aquatics Center at 7 p.m.
