Five Panthers score in women’s water polo victory over McKendree

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team rolled past the visiting McKendree University earlier this evening. The Panthers (2-4, 1-0 SCIAC) were led by five different scorers and senior goalkeeper Kerry Goodspeed, who was solid in goal with six saves and three steals. Chapman held the Bearcats (4-9) to just one goal per quarter in its 10-4 victory.

Freshman Audrey Hattori and senior Andi Sandoval each notched a hat trick. Hattori also tallied three assists and two steals and Sandoval had two assists and an earned ejection. Senior Elaine Peterson came up big for the Panthers with two goals, two assists, two steals and two earned ejections. Seniors Mary Welton and Julia Furtado each netted a goal, with Welton recording two assists and an earned ejection.

The first quarter was all Panther action as Peterson scored back-to-back goals to put Chapman up 2-0. Bearcat sophomore Tiana Wilson scored a goal with 39 seconds left to play in the quarter, but Sandoval answered right back with a goal of her own to give the Panthers a two point lead going into the second quarter.

Hattori started the scoring in the second quarter, netting two consecutive goals within less than a minute of each other to put the Panthers up 5-1. McKendree freshman Emily Westlove was the last to score in the first half, cutting Chapman's lead to three points going into halftime.

Bearcats senior Sabrina Sherrin scored first in the third, but Sandoval and Welton added two goals to Chapman's lead, making the score 7-3 going into the final quarter of play.

Hattori scored first in the fourth quarter but Bearcat sophomore Victoria Jones followed with a goal just over a minute later. Sandoval and Furtado each scored a goal in the final four minutes of play, sealing the victory for the Panthers.

Chapman heads to Claremont, Calif. for the Convergence Tournament this weekend but returns home to Allred Aquatic Center on Sunday, March 4 at 11 a.m. to take on Penn. State Behrend.
