Defensive lock down leads to big win for women's water polo

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Alyssa Welfringer led a solid defensive effort as the Chapman University women's water polo team defeated visiting Penn St.-Behrend 13-5 on Sunday. The Panthers (4-7) totaled 25 steals in the contest to get their second win in a row and fourth in the last seven games.

Welfringer did not allow a goal in the first quarter and allowed just three in three quarters as she came up with nine saves and three more steals. Freshman Audrey Hattori and senior Mary Welton each grabbed six steals to lead the defensive effort from the field.

While the Panther defense locked down the Lions, Chapman built a 3-0 lead in the first half and a 7-1 lead by halftime. Five different Panthers scored in the second half with freshman Emily Whitney and senior Andi Sandoval each scoring twice in the opening 16 minutes.

Sandoval led the Panthers with three goals in the match to go along with a pair of assists. Senior Elaine Peterson had three assists and scored a goal.

The Panthers continued pulling away in the third quarter with four more goals and then cruised through the fourth quarter to grab the win and move to 3-0 at home.

Chapman stays at home for another non-conference matchup on Tuesday with Villanova at 6 p.m.
