Women's water polo drops SCIAC match but defeats Macalester

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team dropped a match to Cal Lutheran, 8-1, before rebounding with a 7-5 win over Macalester in a non-conference matchup.

Game 1 - L, 1-8

Sophomore Argelia Diaz was the sole player to score in the Panthers' (5-11, 1-3 SCIAC) 8-1 loss to the Regals (11-4, 4-0 SCIAC).

After nearly three minutes of no score, Cal Lutheran was the first to strike when sophomore Victoria Rose Meek found the back of the net. Back-to-back goals less than 20 seconds apart extended the Regals' lead to 3-0 heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was all Cal Lutheran action, as junior Megan Seeman scored two consecutive goals followed by two more goals from Regals senior Sam Wulfestieg.

After a scoreless third quarter, Seeman struck again with 4:20 left to play in the game. With 1:43 left to play, sophomore Argelia Diaz scored the Panthers' lone goal off an assist from senior Andi Sandoval, making the final score 8-1.

Senior goalkeeper Kerry Goodspeed tallied two blocks and two steals, while the reserve Alyssa Welfringer recorded a single block. Senior Elaine Peterson drew three exclusions for Chapman and fellow senior Mary Welton tallied five steals to help on the defensive end.

The Panthers return to the pool later tonight at 7 p.m. as they host Macalester College in a non-conference match.

Game 2 - W, 7-5

Chapman found the net a few more times in the nightcap as the Panthers held on for a 7-5 win over Macalester. The Panthers went up early and never trailed with Peterson's three goals leading the way offensively..

In the first 2:20 of the game, Chapman had already outscored itself from the first game. Welton scored first, beating the goalie one-on-one on a breakaway. Just less than a minute later, Welton found Peterson for another Panther goal. Senior Julia Furtado made it 3-0 at the end of the first quarter and Diaz scored early in the second to make it 4-0.

With the Panthers holding a sizable lead, Macalester quickly chipped it down toward the end of the first half. In a one minute span, the Scots nearly erased the deficit completely with three quick goals to make it 4-3 at the half.

Peterson back Chapman back up two with a goal early in the third but Macalester countered with back-to-back goals to tie up the match at 5-5 with 4:03 to go in the quarter. While the Scots battled all the way back, the Panthers defense held them scoreless over the final 12 minutes.

Junior Alyssa Welfringer made 12 blocks and swiped six steals to limit the Scots attack. Meanwhile, freshman Emily Whitney put the Panthers back up at the end of the third quarter and Peterson scored the only goal of the final quarter to give Chapman the win.

The Panthers are back at home on Wednesday with a SCIAC match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7 p.m.
