Water polo falls twice to ranked teams

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team fell in both matches of a doubleheader to Pomona-Pitzer and Cal State East Bay. The Panthers fell 18-5 in their SCIAC match with Division III's top-ranked Pomona-Pitzer and 18-1 to No. 25 in the nation Cal State East Bay.

Game 1 – L, 18-5

Pomona-Pitzer went up 5-1 in the first quarter and did not let up as the Panthers struggled to get anything going against the Sagehens. Senior Mary Welton accounted for the Panthers lone goal in the first and fellow senior Elaine Peterson scored twice in the game of the Panthers.

The Sagehens responded with a four-goal run in the second. After freshman Paige Gurich broke it, the Sagehans went on a five-goal run in the third to blow it open and take home the win.

Game 2 – L, 18-1

The Panthers woes continued into the second match against the Division II Cal State East Bay Pioneers. The Pioneers scored the first seven goals of the match before Welton swiped in a goal off a perfect pass from freshman Audrey Hattori.

However, the Pioneers went on to score the final 11 goals of the game to cruise to the win. Junior Alyssa Welfringer made seven saves in goal with a pair of steals.

Chapman is on the road for its next two matches but returns to Allred Pool on April 7 at 11 a.m. to take on Whittier in a SCIAC match.
