Twelve Panthers tally goals in women’s water polo victory over Caltech

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team rolled past the visiting Caltech Beavers (0-21, 0-13 SCIAC) 19-4 earlier this afternoon. Twelve different Panthers tallied goals, but freshman Talia Florio tallied a hat trick to lead Chapman (10-15, 6-6 SCIAC) to victory.

The Panthers came out of the first sprint strong, scoring three consecutive goals within the first three and a half minutes to take an early lead. Beavers' junior Katie Johnston answered with her first of three goals to cut Chapman's lead to two goals. Freshmen Chelsea Kegans and Paige Gurich added a couple more goals to the Panthers' lead, bringing the score to 5-1 heading into the second quarter.

The second and third quarters were all Panther action. Florio, along with seniors Andi Sandoval, Mary Welton, Ellie Peterson and Julia Furtado each netted one goal while freshman Emily Whitney and sophomore Argelia Diaz tallied two goals to give Chapman a 14-1 lead going into the final quarter of play.

Johnston and junior Hana Keller added three goals to the Beavers' score line, but goals from Florio, Gurich, sophomore Nora Viarnes and freshman Joanna Spyrou gave Chapman their final lead of 19-4.

Freshman goalkeeper Joanna Falla tallied 11 blocks, one steal and three goals scored in three quarters of play. On top of her goal, Kegans recorded four assists and two steals. Both Hattori and Welton each tallied three steals, while sophomore Alissa Caltagirone dished out three assists in the victory.

The Panthers return to Allred Olympic Pool on Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. to take on Redlands. The seniors will be honored as they play their final home game of their careers.
