All-Academic awards roll in for women's water polo

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – Both the team and 14 individual student-athletes on the Chapman University women's water polo team were honored for their work in the classroom by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches. As a team, the Panthers ranked in the top-20 in the nation in GPA across all divisions.

Chapman posted a 3.31 cumulative team GPA this year to rank 18th in the country among all women's water polo teams across all three divisions. Fourteen of the 18 student-athletes on the squad also earned individual honors.

Freshman Second Team All-American Audrey Hattori headlined the individual accolades with recognition in the Outstanding category. Six more Panthers earned Superior recognition with seven more landing Excellent recognition.

Divided into three teams (Outstanding: 4.0-3.71; Superior: 3.70-3.41; Excellent: 3.40-3.20), a record total of 573 student-athletes earned All-Academic status, shattering the all-time high of 548 set last year. Among the Superior selections were Chapman student-athletes All-American senior Kerry Goodspeed, All-American senior Ellie Peterson, Chelsea Kegans, Joanna Spyrou, Kylie Beloian and Nora Viarnes. The Panthers in the Excellent category were Alyssa Welfringer, Argelia Diaz, Joanna Falla, Mary Welton, Julia Furtado, Emily Whitney and Talia Florio.

The All-Academic team award marks the seventh year in a row the head coach Eric Ploessel's squad has earned the distinction and the 13th time in his 15 years as head coach.
