Women's water polo notches 8-5 victory over McKendree

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University women's water polo team defeated McKendree University 8-5 at home on Saturday, March 3. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Welfringer had an outstanding game, tallying eight saves.

The Panthers were down 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore Audrey Hattori started the Panthers on the board with a goal assisted by sophomore Lauren Dvonch.

In the last two minutes of the second quarter, junior Argelia Diaz scored a goal assisted by freshman Mia Chanove. The Panthers ended the second quarter down 3-2.

The third quarter proved to be a turning point for the Panthers. Chapman tallied four goals during the quarter and only allowed one for the Bearcats. Diaz scored her second goal of the game with less than a minute and a half into the quarter. Less than a minute after, freshman Kaitlyn Moguel of McKendree scored, keeping the Bearcats ahead with a score of 4-3. Soon after, Hattori, sophomore Kylie Beloian, and Dvonch scored three consecutive goals. Chapman ended the quarter leading 6-4.

Chapman junior Roisin Cunningham Smythe was the first to score in the fourth quarter. Moguel of McKendree soon followed with a goal, but less than 30 seconds later junior Alissa Caltagirone of Chapman scored the final goal of the game. The game ended with a score of 8-5.

The Panthers will play again at home on Wednesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. as they host Occidental in their first SCIAC match of the 2019 season.
