Women’s water polo takes second game of doubleheader

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team beat the visiting Austin College Kangaroos 13-10 in the second game of a doubleheader after falling to Cal Lutheran 16-5 in the morning game. Junior Argelia Diaz tallied a hat trick in both games to help the Panthers.

Game 1 – Cal Lutheran 16, Chapman 5

After two minutes of scoreless play, the Regals struck first to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Mia Chanove evened the score less than a minute later with a man-up goal, but Cal Lutheran finished out the first period with two goals to take a 3-1 lead heading into the second.

Neither team could find the back of the net for the first five minutes of the second quarter. The Regals scored with less than three minutes on the clock to take a three-goal lead. Diaz scored the first of her three goals with just over a minute left to play in the half. Cal Lutheran responded with a goal on the next possession to take a 5-2 lead heading into the second half.

Diaz opened the second half with a goal one minute into the third, but the Regals answered with a five-goal run to take a 10-3 lead with just under two minutes left to play in the quarter. Junior Alissa Caltagirone found the back of the net with 42 seconds left to play in the quarter to make the score 1-4 heading into the final eight minutes.

Diaz scored her third and final goal at the 6:39 mark, but Cal Lutheran scored five consecutive goals to finish out the game and notch the victory.

Sophomores Lauren Dvonch and Audrey Hattori each tallied two assists in the effort. Hattori also recorded three steals and three earned ejections in the loss.

Game 2 - Chapman 13, Austin 10

Neither team scored until the 2:12 mark in the first quarter when Hattori notched her first of three goals. Freshman Charlene Ma scored again just over a minute later to tally the final goal of the quarter and put the Panthers up 2-0.

Diaz scored her first goal of the game less than a minute into the second, followed by a goal from the Kangaroos just 16 seconds later. Chapman then went on a six-goal run to take a 9-1 lead with 5:30 left to play in the third.

Austin College freshman Presley Woods scored next, sparking a 7-0 run from the 'Roos to cut their deficit to just one goal. With 6:10 left to play in the game and the Panthers up 9-8, Diaz scored her second goal of the game on a man-up to give Chapman a two-goal lead. Woods fired right back, bringing Austin back within one.

Dvonch scored 24 seconds later, but 'Roos freshman Lexi Wong answered with a goal at the three-minute mark to make the score 11-10. Diaz scored her third and final goal just 11 seconds later, followed by Hattori's third goal to seal the victory for the Panthers.

Dvonch also tallied four assists and two steals to go along with her lone goal. Hattori scored three, dished out three assists, tallied four steals and earned five ejections in the winning effort. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Welfringer tallied eight saves and seven steals to help the Panthers in the cage.

Chapman returns to Allred Olympic Pool on Tuesday, March 19 to host Macalester College at 11 a.m.
