Women's water polo holds off Macalester for 7-6 win

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University women's water polo team defeated Macalester College in a close 7-6 win. Sophomore Audrey Hattori led the Panthers with three goals, followed by sophomore Kylie Beloian with two goals.  

Senior Alyssa Welfringer made 11 saves in goal and had six steals.

The Panthers ended the first quarter with a 2-0 lead. Both goals were scored by Hattori and Beloian, respectively.

Macalester started off the second quarter with back-to-back goals to tie up the game. Less than a minute later, Chapman started a three-goal run to take the lead back. The first goal of this quarter was scored by junior Argelia Diaz who was assisted by Hattori. Beloian got her second and final goal during this quarter and was assisted by sophomore Emily Whitney. Hattori scored her second goal, assisted by freshman Lauren Jufiar. In the last 45 seconds of the quarter, senior Lucille Moran of Macalester scored a goal, ending the quarter with the Panthers ahead at 5-3.

Hattori scored the first and only goal of the third quarter, furthering Chapman's lead to 6-3.

Macalester started the fourth quarter with a goal, but sophomore Lauren Dvonch scored two minutes later to put the Panthers back up by three. Macalester's Riley Waters and Natalie Hoffman pulled the Scots back within one with back-to-back goals. The Panthers were able to hold off the late comeback for the win.   

Chapman will be at home again tomorrow March 20 at 11am against Whittier College.
