Women's water polo drops SCIAC contest to Whittier

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team fell 18-10 to Whittier in a return to conference play. Junior Argelia Diaz scored four goals to lead the Panthers.

Chapman quickly went up 2-0 in the first quarter with goals from sophomores Lauren Dvonch and Audrey Hattori. Chapman's defense held strong until surrendering a 5-meter shot with 1:34 left.

Whittier's Teresa Marchetti converted the opportunity to get the Poets on the board and sparked a 7-1 run over the next seven minutes. Marchetti scored all five of her goals in the 7-1 run that went from the end of the first quarter until the 2:55 mark of the second quarter.

Chapman scored three times in the second quarter, including two from Diaz, but could keep pace with Whittier's six goals to take an 8-5 lead at halftime.

The Panthers never came closer than three goals the rest of the way as the Poets scored six times in the third and four more in the fourth.

Dvonch ended up with two goals, four assists and four steals for a strong all-around effort.

The Panthers are back at Allred Pool on Saturday to take on Division I Brown at 11:30 a.m.
