Women’s water polo falls in hard fought game against Pomona-Pitzer

ORANGE, Calif. - On Wednesday night the Chapman University women's water polo team fell 12-6 in their match against Pomona-Pitzer, who is undefeated in conference play. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Welfringer put up an impressive nine saves in the effort.

Chapman started off the game with two unanswered goals by sophomores Audrey Hattori and Emily Whitney, but the Sagehens scored three goals in a row to take the lead going into the second period at 3-2.

Junior Argelia Diaz scored the only Chapman goal of the second period. Pomona-Pitzer followed up with its fourth goal of the game to enter the second half 4-3.

The Sagehens scored a goal in the first 20 seconds of the third period, and then scored twice more in the first half of the period to further their lead to 7-3. Diaz scored with less than a minute in the period, but was immediately followed by a Pomona-Pitzer goal.

The Sagehens were the first to score in the fourth period but Hattori immediately retaliated with the Panthers' fifth goal of the game. The Sagehens scored again but Diaz rallied once more to lessen the deficit 10-6. Pomona Pitzer scored twice more in the last two minutes to earn the 12-6 win.

Whitney tallied four steals while Hattori added three. Hattori also had two assists and four earned ejections to go alone with her two goals.

The Panthers will celebrate seniors Diaz and Welfringer as they host Caltech in the final match of the season on Saturday, April 17 at 11 a.m.
