Long's seven goals help Panthers split double header

ORANGE, Calif — The Chapman Panthers split a double header between the Cal Lutheran Regals and Virginia Military Institute Keydets, losing 14-8 to Cal Lutheran and winning 14-11 against VMI. Ally Long and Camille Chiang were on fire all day; the duo combined to score 14 goals.

Game 1

The Panthers dropped game one of the set against the Regals. Cal Lutheran came out firing and led by a convincing 7-1 after the first quarter.

A strong five-goal performance from Lexi Rond kept Cal Lutheran at a comfortable lead throughout the match.

As the game went on, Chapman narrowed the gap. The Panthers held the Regals scoreless in the second quarter behind some strong team defense, while Morgan O'Connell and Chiang scored, closing the deficit to a manageable four.

Four ended up being the closest the Panthers would get, however, as the Regals offense proved too potent down the stretch.

Long and O'Connell finished with two goals apiece, while Long added five steals to her ledger.

Game 2

The Panthers and Keydets were evenly matched throughout the first two quarters of the game, as they split three goals apiece in both quarters.

However, the second half was the Panthers, and more importantly Long's, time to shine. The graduate student scored all five goals for Chapman in the third quarter, and scored a total of six straight Panther goals dating back to the first half.

Long's five goals were good enough to extend Chapman's lead to four to begin the final frame, and to put away the Keydets.

Chiang was also on a tear throughout game two, scoring four goals, two of which coming in the fourth quarter.

With the split on the day, the Panthers leave their season record just a game below .500, 8-9. They will look to even it up on Sunday, Mar. 13, when they take on the Whittier Poets.
