Women's cross country places seventh at UCR Invite

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Mid-morning, high-90 degree weather didn't slow the Chapman University men's and women's cross country program in its opening meet at UC Riverside on Saturday. The Panther women earned their best team finish ever in the 5K Collegiate Open, placing seventh out of 20 teams, while men's school record holder in the 8K junior Chris Reid crossed the finish line 41 seconds faster than he did on the same course last year.

Reid crossed with a time of 26:32.6 in the 8K Invitational and in 128th place out of 239 runners. The junior ran the same meet in 27:13.5 a year ago on his way to setting the school record later in the season. Also for the men, freshman Adam Frey debuted with a time of 27:51.4.

Meanwhile, the women displayed some speed and depth in the 5K, led by sophomore Cori Stemper who placed 47th out of 247 competitors with a finishing time of 19:28.5. Not far behind was sophomore Cathryne Ramirez who came in 65th with a time of 19:41.0 and four more Chapman women who all finished under 21 minutes.

Both Chapman men's and women's teams will take the next three weeks off of competition before traveling to the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on Oct. 4.
