Sakurai finishes in top-25 at Golden West Central Park Classic

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Freshman Cailyn Sakurai finished in the top-25 to lead the Chapman University cross country teams at the Golden West Central Park Classic. The women's team took ninth in the 5k race while the men's team came in 16th in the four-mile race.

Sakurai paced the Panthers with a 21:49.7 to take 25th overall in the 15-team, 124-runner race. Another freshman¸ Montana Jelden, was the next to cross the finish line for the Panthers with a time of 22:44.0. Junior Nika Cokas ran a 23:15.4 to finish 59th overall. Freshman Ryly Yee and sophomore Jasmine Labrador rounded out the Panthers scoring as Yee came in at 23:56.3 and Labrador finished at 24:34.4.

The men's team took on a four-mile course with sophomore Tomas Aragone leading the way. Aragone finished with a time of 25:07.9 to pace the Panthers' runners. Junior Jonah Soltes wasn't far behind, finishing at 25:36.9. Sophomore Erick Garcia was the next Panther across the finish line with a 26:14.5. Sophomore Chris Pai posted a time of 27:26.2 and freshman Max Lopez finished out the scoring with a 31:53.6.

"Overall, it was a good race for us," head coach DeAndra'e Woods stated after the race. "We showed a lot of intensity that will help us build over the next few weeks."

The cross country teams head to La Mirada, Calif. next week for the SCIAC Multi-Duals.
