Sakurai leads the way in SCIAC multi-dual

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's cross country teams competed in the SCIAC Multi-Dual this afternoon at La Mirada Regional Park. The women placed eighth overall in the 6K race but posted a 2-6 record, beating both Cal Lutheran and La Verne in head-to-head scoring.

Freshman Cailyn Sakurai led the pack with the best time out of the eight Panthers that battled in the women's race, coming in at 24:47.7 and finishing 50th in the 119-runner race.

A trio of Panthers finished neck-in-neck in the middle of the pack. Freshman Emma Eglinton finished in 61st place with a time of 25:05.6, while just three spots behind her was junior Mia Hernandez, who came in three seconds later at 25:08.2. Junior Katie Maynard was right on their heels, finishing just two seconds after Hernandez with a time of 25:10.6.

The men did not have enough runners to score as a team, but were led individually by sophomore Drake Butler, who came in 41st place in the 113-runner 8K race with a time of 27:50.5. Freshman Kian Deshler was the next Panther to finish the race, posting a time of 30:29.7. Rounding out the Chapman squad was junior Jonah Soltes, who finished with a time of 32:30.9.

The Panthers take the next couple of weeks off but head to Claremont on Saturday, Oct. 14 where they will compete in the Pomona-Pitzer Invite.
